"icftgn53tploh2ykivctvdabkyxyfxgibjqzohjkxi0p0xym.jpg.jpg?w=1140&v=2"Get your green gladrags on! Sunday 17th 2024 is this year's Saint Patrick's Day!

So what's it all about? Well, it's a celebration of a guy who was stolen from Wales as a slave & taken to Ireland to work as a shepherd in the 5th century. His name wasn't actually Patrick & he wasn't actually Irish either. His real name was Maewyn Succatt & he was Welsh.

"awlsb4tolzvarhfoe2o8wzsk1p3x29ichcci9nzfghawty9t.jpg.jpg?w=1140&v=2"By legend, St Patrick as he became known, is credited with driving all the snakes from Ireland & bringing Christianity to the land. The shamrock became synonymous because he used it as a symbol of The Holy Trinity (The Father, Son & Holy Spirit).

"mazlqvjqwja6uf2wfk4gytyh84c0ds2n8zvzw3izt8bex0dw.jpg.jpg?w=1140&v=2"A fun tradition of St Patrick's Day is that if you don't wear green, the leprechauns will pinch you! However, St Patrick was originally associated with blue.

"uvlulodnvmd7jfb7blwnk8hspwjlukfrcmriooziios08rlk.jpg.jpg?w=1140&v=2"If you are looking for a traditional Irish dinner to celebrate, you could try corned beef hash which is mashed potato with corned beef mixed in. Serve with cabbage. Or maybe bacon, cabbage & mashed potato. Mashed potato is traditionally mixed with chopped spring onion & is known as ‘Colcannon’.

However, celebrations of St Patrick were actually taken up by America, with the first festival taking place near New York in 1762. This tradition eventually spread globally to become what it is today. The date of 17th of March was the date of his death & while celebrating his death might seem macabre, it is actually traditional on Ireland, to celebrate the life of someone on their passing. An Irish ‘wake’ is usually a lively affair & not sombre at all.

Whatever you choose do on March 17th, enjoy the craic with your best social buddies. Happy St Patrick's Day!
