So what's it all about? Well, it's a celebration of a guy who was stolen from Wales as a slave & taken to Ireland to work as a shepherd in the 5th century. His name wasn't actually Patrick & he wasn't actually Irish either. His real name was Maewyn Succatt & he was Welsh.<\/p>

The shamrock became synonymous because he used it as a symbol of The Holy Trinity (The Father, Son & Holy Spirit).<\/p>

However, celebrations of St Patrick were actually taken up by America, with the first festival taking place near New York in 1762. This tradition eventually spread globally to become what it is today. The date of 17th of March was the date of his death & while celebrating his death might seem macabre, it is actually traditional on Ireland, to celebrate the life of someone on their passing. An Irish \u2018wake\u2019 is usually a lively affair & not sombre at all.<\/p>
