For the 2nd blog celebrating Movember, we will look at men's skincare.<\/p>

Did you know, men's skin is less acidic than women's skincare? Men's skin pH ranges between 5.5 & 5.8 whereas women's skin lies between 5.5 & 4.8. There are other differences between genders too. For instance, men have thicker skin than women but also the Collagen we have in our skin, lowers at a constant level in men throughout their life, whereas in women it remains mostly the same level before decreasing suddenly in their 40s & further with menopause.<\/p>

Since men's skin is thicker than women's, it is important when designing & formulating certain products (depending on desired product function), to use the right oils. Oils have different chemical compositions & behave differently. Heavy oils like coconut oil for instance, will have larger molecules which will take longer to penetrate skin to the level required, if at all, where lighter oils with smaller molecules eg jojoba are quickly absorbed.<\/p>

\"cnkzp3wkmmksed2kqkxxclsmvnwccofc5bsxjveni4mx0z7d.jpg.jpg?w=1140&v=2\"What is also interesting is that many maintream skincare products for men, tend to have a pH of 5.8 or higher which means they are not only more abrasive on the skin bit compromise it's barrier function (the skin's ability to protect us from infection etc) creating sensitivity, inflammation & dryness. Compromised Barrier Function is also seen with skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis.<\/p>

When looking for male skincare products, it is a great idea to check if they are \u201cpH Balanced\u201d because they will be more likely to match the natural balance of men's skin, maintaining (sometimes repairing) Barrier Function.<\/p>

Alternatively, there is always the option of Natural or Organic Skincare products, which is an increasingly popular market currently growing exponentially. This is great news for men, given the limited choice of products they have had over the years until more awareness has grown, contrary to the endless choices available in women's skincare!<\/p>

During my training, I felt so moved by this concept that I designed, formulated & created my own Nordic Aftershave Balm. I used my surrounding environment of West Coast Scotland & Ancient Vikings as inspiration, using ingredients such as Seaweed, Cardamom (yes this was imported from the Spice Trail to Scandinavia by Viking Longboats!), Juniper Berries & Oat Oil. In natural skincare, I love using Oat Oil for its creamy, silky, soothing qualities, it is rich in anti-inflammatory chemicals & a lovely oil to work with but another firm favourite of mine is Jojoba Oil as it is the closest Oil to the natural oils produced by human skin (called sebum). Therefore, it balances Sebum production & as it is counted as a \u2018dry\u2019 oil, it is quickly absorbed, leaving no residue just silky healthy, happy skin. With all these benefits, it's a great asset to acne prone skin too.<\/p>
